145.00

John Dennis is a strangely beautiful bird who lives in Ojai with his wife and silent son, Sam, for whom his company is named. The family collects vintage clothing and old textiles, which they repurpose into jewelry and accessories.

This necklace is punctuated with beads along a vintage bandana with a floral print.

THE BACKSTORY:

They’re in the flea markets of New Mexico. The back nook of a granny’s musty closet. A warehouse in Cleveland. Many vintage textiles, antique fabrics, and worn leather have been forgotten, but John Dennis will not forsake them. He will handpick them and craft them into tangible memories.

“With style, you don’t have to reinvent the wheel,” says Dennis, the founder of apparel company Sam Roberts LA, which he named after his son. “You just have to reinvent something that brings someone back, makes them think, Yeah, I remember that without feeling gimmicky or costume-y.”

Dennis scours the country for rare vintage fabrics and siphons his curiosity about the world into wearable expressions, turning calico dresses from the 1800s into hand-rolled necklaces dotted with trade beads. He presses Western and Trilby hats with fountain grass collected from his backyard, leaving faint, wistful outlines of blossoms that many would only think to preserve in a book.

Everything about Sam Roberts LA is a reinvention. As a man and an artist, Dennis has found himself as renovated as one of his designs. “I’m not talented, I’m just curious,” he says. “People tell you to listen to your heart and to follow your dreams. They tell you that you should try. I didn’t listen because I thought that selling what I create was a pipe dream. Then we had Sam, and I realized that I wanted to tell him to obey his heart and follow his dreams. You can’t tell your son to do that unless you live it yourself.”
