From screen printer Zeb Love:

"Vermont’s seal was designed by Ira Allen (brother of Revolutionary War patriot Ethan Allen) in the 1700s, and its age shows. I thought it would be interesting to reinterpret it. Not only is 'freedom and unity' the state’s motto, it was also a running theme I gathered from talking to Vermonters. The idea is that we’re all in the same boat of working and pursuing knowledge together—hence, the book. The sun and the moon represent life-giving influences, and the tree growing from the pages is the natural manifestation of what we’ve learned from what we’ve read or written in that book."
