STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY Danny Gugger
IN WISCONSIN, a long weekend trip usually means either The Apostle Islands or Door County. Seated on the Sturgeon Bay, Door County is a quiet vacation area rich with the Scandinavian culture it was founded on.
GOOD EGGS is a great place for a quiet breakfast in the sleepy lakeside town of Ephraim. Get omelets and burritos made to order and eat off their surfboard tables. Wilson's Restaurant Parlor and Ice Cream is known for their home brewed root beer and old fashioned sodas. It's the perfect spot to split an enormous sundae with a friend or enjoy a cone by yourself at the lake across the street. Door County is one of the best spots in the nation for growing cherries, so be sure to grab some while you're there.
The Bearded Heart, in Bailey's Harbor, serves locally roasted Ruby Coffee and specializes in their assortment of drinks made with goat milk. Other drink spots: Island Orchard Cider, Death's Door Spirits, Door County Brewing Company.
Cave Point County Park offers hiking trails along the rocky cliffs of Lake Michigan and nearby Whitefish Dunes State Park has one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in Wisconsin. Other hiking spots: Death Door Bluff, Rock Island State Park.
For the budget traveler, camping is the best way to go on Door County. There is an abundance of beautiful state parks and quiet private campgrounds. If you're looking for something a little less rustic, there are plenty of short term rental homes for groups of all sizes. From quaint cabins tucked away in one of the many private bays to condo apartments with pools and boat rentals, Door County has lodging for any style of travel.
