WORDS BY Seth Putnam
“The mind divides, while the heart unites.”
This is the credo that guides Michael Lightweaver, 70, who established this“enchanted spiritual retreat center” deep in Pisgah National Forest. His goal, when he moved here in 1995 with his dog and a library of books, was to help travelers reconnect with their essential nature—and to explore the concepts of innocence, love, and divine presence. No one is turned away for lack of money; they can work on the property in exchange for lodging in any number of small, off-grid sleeping structures that draw their influences from Japan, the South Pacific, Narnia, Middle-earth. As for Michael himself, he’s present to Socratically guide spiritual journeys. “When people walk in, I want them to feel like they’re walking back a thousand years,” he says. “It’s nice to see people who aren’t pretending.” And that’s what this is: a place without pretense.
